Blocking the Intersection With Nowhere To Go
By rowatson @ 11:03 AM :: 234 Views :: 4 Comments ::

So I'm leaving work yesterday and I normally make a right onto Kolb to head home. Instead I was headed to my boyfriends house so I made a left onto Kolb. Leaving the station we're on a business road so I don't come out at a light. You know how Kolb is divided? Well I went to jump across to head south when a police car came speeding up so I ended up stopping in the middle waiting for him to pass. He quickly turned into the left turning lane in front of me and I went on my way. Apparently there was another police car behind me... the ones with no lights on top so you dont really notice them. Sneaky! As soon as I was on my way, so was he with his little flashy lights on the dash. I pull over into a neighborhood to get off Kolb and await my verdict. He slowly inspects my filthy van, peering into the windows which made me take notice as to how filthy the inside is as well. Got the standard "license, registration and proof of insurance."  Is there a reason you pulled me over I asked... "Yes... there's a reason." Ok... I was sure I was going to get a ticket at that point. After he pointed out that I gave him last years insurance card and then found my current one he told me that I was "blocking the intersection with nowhere to go." It made me chuckle a little but he assured me that's what it's called. I explained that I had a clear shot across until the other cop came flying up which made me stop. He shamed me for a bit while I apologized as much as you do to a policeman hoping to not get a ticket. He asked if I have ever gotten a ticket before... wish I could say never, but it's been quite a while. He then told me it was my lucky day and to not do it again. "Yes sir! No sir I wont! Thank you!"  Sigh of relief. Who can afford the extra expense of a ticket let alone the hassle of it. So  now I'm here to educate you from my experience. If you ever pull out into the middle of the road or sit in the middle lane waiting to get over it has a name. "Blocking the intersection with nowhere to go."  Now we know. =)

Now if this doesn't go figure.. I noticed yesterday that where the first cop came zipping up and into the turning lane... he made an illegal u-turn! There is a sign clearly posted and he should have turned into the road I was coming from but noooo.... And I got pulled over??

I am so glad you brought attention to this serious problem - PLEASE - from now on, go with the flow of traffic and drive further and turn around if you need to. The worst offenders are "courteous" drivers who pressure people to pull out in front of them. Hey, courteous drivers - you do not have control over the rest of all the cars. You can get someone killed (and often do). Oh, and then when that really nice person insisting that you drive out into traffic - they just drive off when you get hit by another car just going with the flow (and has the right of way).
Stop being "nice" and signaling people to break the law and risk theirs and others lives. Man, I hate that!!!

Im confused.... is the serious problem the fact that Rosemary did the right thing in letting the first officer through and was harassed by the second police officer who was a complete power tripper. ... its your lucky day??? What is that? Or is there another serious problem???

Normally I am one of those drivers that does go with the flow and drives a little further. Every morning I drive around the block when taking my kids to school because I hate trying to cross and try to head north on 1st Ave at that time of day. It's almost impossible so we just take a quick trip around. In this case I had a straight shot across which is completely legal.. just had to stop for the cop. While on a note of courteous drivers... what I believe is even worse is when a car stops in the middle of the street to let a pedestrian cross who's not in a crosswalk. Now there's a good way to get someone killed there! One car stops to let them across while the other driver never sees them coming. Don't do that! I agree that that being 'nice' can sometimes get someone hurt or worse while on the road.
